Pedestrian Environment Index (PEI)

Here we display a sample of figures from our 2014 article “Development and application of the Pedestrian Environment Index (PEI)” that was published in the Journal of Transport Geography. The analysis and the figure were made by CSUN’s Farid Peiravi (click on the figure for a full pdf version). In our never-ending quest to develop new metrics that capture essential properties of urban systems, here, we concentrate on walking. We developed a pedestrian environment index (PEI) based on four essential zone-based characteristics: land-use diversity, population density, commercial density, and intersection density. The results are great and quite insightful! We obviously invite you to read the full paper. Please let us know if you apply it to your city, we would be delighted to show the results on the website.
